Dr. Evelyn Nelson

Dr. Evelyn Nelson is Clinical Assistant Professor, in the Department of Cariology and Comprehensive Care, at NewYork University College of Dentistry (NYUCD), in New York City. She earned a dental degree from the University of Medicine & Dentistry-New Jersey Dental School (UMDNJ-NJDS) in Newark, NJ, a masters degree in epidemiology and public health at Yale University, New Haven, Connecticut, and a bachelor of science degree in general chemistry at Bloomfield College, Bloomfield, NJ.

Past professional activities include a private dental practice, in general dentistry, at the Central Parkway Professional Building, East Orange, NJ, independent research consultant on special projects at NYUCD, co-investigator on several National Institutes of Health funded projects, through the National Association of Dental Research, undertaken, at the time, by the Northeastern Minority Oral Health Research Center, at the UMDNJ-NJDS, and is published in peer reviewed scientific journals on issues concerning dental disease and HIV-infected children and women.

Currently, her duties at NYUCD include direct clinincal teaching of 3rd and 4th year dental students and their care for patients seeking dental treatment at the university.  Through her specific training as a general dentist she is qualified for all disciplines of dental treatment, from simple restorations to dental implants.  As assistant to her General Practice Director, Dr. Nelson is standardized in many of the specific competency exams students must take to prepare for state board examinations, and is Director in charge of the 4th year, senior’s only cariology program.

Dr. Nelson’s personal life is dedicated to family, friends, and her church. She and her husband, Freddie have been married for 42 years, are the dedicated parents of two children, grandparents of three, and godparents of two.  She resides in Union County, in the city of Plainfield, NJ, where she attends Covenant United Methodist Church.

Dr. Nelson currently sits on local, district, and conference level committees in the United Methodist church of the Raritan Valley District. She has taught in her local church and at district level events, e.g., Sunday school, bible, Advent, and confirmation classes.  As District Lay Leader and Lay Speaker in her denomenation, she has facilitated leadership training programs and has been responsible for program planning for the laity in her church district.  On occasion, she has also brought the Sunday worship message to the congregation of her local church.  Through her life’s work and personal experience she has developed particular interest and expertise in the assessment of clinical competency, professionalism, mentorship, and the desire to help promote general public health issues that benefits populations.
